Peter Whyte's photographs exploring the beauty of dying botanical specimens featured in The Planthunter, in an article titled Moments of The Sublime, Ashley Crawford wrote " Peter Whyte's work is not simply 'black' - it is the culmination of myriad tones of blackness captured by both focus and Whyte's meticulous approach to lighting.  Yes there is theatre here, and drama aplenty - these are moments in time, slices of a chronology in the inevitable cycle of growth and decay, captured like "tears in the rain" and they are powerfully, potently, sensual".

The Grand Palais in Paris is hosting a major retrospective of the work of Robert Mapplethorpe until July 13, 2014.  At the same time two new books published by Schirmer/Mosel examine the photographer's favourite subjects - the human body and botany.  Mapplethorpe uses light beautifully.

The National Photographic Portrait Prize 2014 was won by Andrew Cowen with a portrait of cartoonist Matthew Martin.  It is a very fine portrait of a very intense sitter.  Curiously the other portraits that I am attracted to also have intense models.  Reg by Steven William Siewert and Megan by Gary Grealy There is something about them all that has the look of a traditional painting.  There are no excesses.  The  images are beautifully composed and you can feel the intensity of their personalities.

Mathew Martin
The winning portrait is striking in its minimalism  and it shows a cloudy complexity of thinking - the person in the portrait is looking outwards and inwards.  The guest judge, photographer Greg Weight, says the winning portrait 'achieves maximum visual impact through the use of minimal, elegant composition - and then it begins to work psychologically.  there is no doubt in this portrait Matthew Martin appears to be deep in thought....it is a perfect use of restraint by the photographer'

The Art lovers - Megan
This photograph is from a series looking at people who attend art exhibition openings and are engaged with or have a connection to the art world.  Inspired by the photographer's observations during visits to galleries, the image is about a unique style that is just outside mainstream society.  Megan Hanson completed Honours in Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts last year and currently teaches Photomedia part-time at the College of Fine Arts, Sydney.  Megan has exhibited locally and in 2014 will show in a group exhibition in Copenhagen.

Reg
In person, Reg Mombassa is the antithesis of his vibrant and colour-saturated work for which he is well known.  The photographer says he has always found Reg softly spoken and his clothes devoid of colour.

Tony Abbott by Michael Bowers
In this photograph Tony Abbott gives a press conference outside the House of Representative doors, Parliament House, Canberra.  At the time he was still Leader of the Opposition.
